Course Credit Types

Post by gtdrives »

At this point I've been asked to provide credit types for different organization departments. Is there a way to create credit types for different courses? And if not what pages and database tables would I edit to add this functionality?

Hi, welcome on board!

I don't know if you already checked this out but, in the course options, there is a field called "credits" where you can assign credit to a course.

Then, if you add the "credits" module (in Administration>elearning>settings>user area in Lms) to the front end, users will be able to see the credits they have achieved on the right side of the Lms, under their profile.

Does this satisfy what you're looking for?

I have seen that, but I was wondering if like say for example you have a hospital. They may have certification programs that also have credit types like: credit type Surgery, Nursing, ect. Is there a way to make the different credit types that users can look at their own profile and see for instance, John Doe has 6 credits for nursing and say 2 credits for surgery? Without seeing what courses he took.

I noticed you can create course categories is it possible I can tally up the credits based on course categories for a user account?

Well, there's no way right now to distinguish credits according to different categories.
However, if you turn the "credits" module on it displays a table with a list of courses and the number of credits achieved for each of them.

There is another nice feature called "competences", although it is mainly used for skills management. It's used together with roles.
For instance, you have the role of a surgeon and you are required to achieve 2 skills: surgery (5 points) and patient care (2 points). It's not the same as credits, but maybe it could be used for the same purpose.

Hey thanks for all the information and fast response. I see the benefits of using course competencies and have started implementing them.

Is it possible I could be pin pointed to the code that handles course credits? I already updated the field in the database to a float because I'm working with an organization that requires half credits like 1.5.

Let's see if our colleague developers are able to pin point you to the relevant code.
Anyway, I'd say that the credits can also be used with decimals.
